Planning an Ultrasound Probe Reprocessing Station in Uganda

Help an ultrasound service specify a compatible reprocessing method, safe probe storage and enough capacity between scheduled examinations.

A clinic adding an endocavitary ultrasound service may budget for the probe but forget the time it spends out of the scanning room. Before scheduling consecutive appointments, follow the probe through cleaning, disinfection, storage and return. That journey tells the service manager what the station needs.

Specify the examination and exact probe model

Give the infection-prevention lead the examination types, transducer identifiers and manufacturer’s current reprocessing instructions. AIUM distinguishes probes used on intact skin from internal probes; internal use requires high-level disinfection between patients as well as an appropriate single-use cover. The cover does not replace reprocessing.

This is a planning guide, not a chemical recipe. Have the facility’s qualified lead determine the required method for each use. Confirm compatibility with both the probe instructions and the proposed reprocessing system before purchasing either.

Map the dirty-to-clean route

On a room sketch, mark where a used probe is received, where cleaning and disinfection take place, and where a processed probe is stored. Ask staff to trace the route with an empty holder. Do they need to cross the clean storage area while carrying used equipment? Can the cable be supported without dragging across a work surface?

Ask suppliers for the station footprint, utility requirements, worker protection requirements and instructions for the probe connector and cable. Do not infer an immersion limit from another probe made by the same company.

Calculate the time the probe is unavailable

Use the full documented process, including transport, cleaning, disinfection, any required rinsing or drying, and return. As a planning exercise, compare that turnaround with the busiest appointment block—not the daily average. If the same probe is needed twice before it can return, investigate scheduling, additional capacity or another compatible probe. Shortening the validated process is not a capacity solution.

Request separate quotations for the station, repeat-use accessories, consumables, storage, training and supplies needed for process checks. Assign an owner to track stock and records before the first appointment.

Put the handover in writing

Ask the supplier to demonstrate the agreed workflow with your exact probe model under supervision of the facility lead. Keep the compatibility evidence and current instructions at the point of use. If a probe changes later, reassess the pairing before assuming it can use the same station.

For an enquiry, send Exper your probe models, examination mix, layout and peak workload. Specify whether you need equipment options, accessories or a written support scope.
