Buying an Ultrasound in Uganda: Which Probes Should Be Included?

Choose an ultrasound probe package for your Ugandan clinic: intended examinations, model compatibility, software options, care and quotation checks.

By Exper Medical Network Ltd · Published

Two ultrasound offers can show the same scanner but include different probes. For a clinic buying in Uganda, “one ultrasound machine” is not a complete specification. The useful purchase is a scanner, compatible probes and the enabled functions that match the work your trained clinical team intends to perform.

Define the examinations before counting probes

Ask the clinician responsible for ultrasound to list the planned examinations and separate essential work from future expansion. Give this list to each supplier. A three-probe package is not automatically more suitable than a two-probe package if the additional probe does not serve your service plan.

The following is a purchasing discussion aid, not an examination protocol. The clinical lead should confirm the appropriate configuration and training for your facility.

Understand the main probe families

  • Convex or curvilinear: commonly considered for abdominal and obstetric applications, with a broad view suited to deeper structures.
  • Linear: commonly considered for superficial structures and vascular or musculoskeletal applications.
  • Phased array: commonly considered for cardiac applications, with a small contact footprint.
  • Endocavity: a specialised probe used for certain internal examinations, including selected gynaecological and urological applications.

These broad categories follow Mindray's explanation of ultrasound transducer types. They do not establish which particular probe is compatible with your scanner, or which examinations an individual configuration supports.

Require exact model numbers in the quotation

Ask for the scanner model and each probe's full model identifier, quantity and condition. Do not accept “convex probe included” as the only description. Request written confirmation that the offered probes work with the specific system and its installed software configuration.

Have the supplier distinguish standard functions from licensed options and optional accessories. If your team requires a particular Doppler function, measurement package or reporting workflow, list it explicitly and ask for it to be demonstrated. A photograph of a screen or a probe connector is not enough to settle compatibility.

Use the demonstration to check your proposed package

  • Ask to see each quoted probe identified and recognised by the offered system.
  • Have your trained operator assess the agreed applications and controls using an appropriate demonstration arrangement.
  • Inspect probe housings, cables and connectors for visible damage, particularly when considering used equipment.
  • Confirm included holders, transport protection and accessories rather than relying on a catalogue photograph.
  • Document any unresolved question before accepting the final configuration.

For refurbished or used equipment, request the available inspection and service records and clear warranty terms for both the scanner and probes. A machine warranty should not be assumed to cover every accessory on the same terms.

Budget for care and replacement

Request the care instructions for each probe and the manufacturer's approved cleaning and disinfection guidance. Mindray publishes transducer-care resources; the applicable instructions must match the actual equipment supplied. Have the facility's infection-prevention team confirm the required workflow and supplies before clinical use.

Ask how a damaged probe would be assessed, the route for technical support and the likely sourcing process for a replacement. For buyers receiving equipment in South Sudan, specify how a probe would be packed and returned if an assessment in Kampala were needed. Agree responsibilities and charges instead of assuming cross-border service is included.

Send Exper a probe-specific enquiry

Start with our ultrasound equipment page. Send your facility location, planned examinations, operator's requirements, preferred scanner and requested probe list. Ask Exper to state included probes and options separately, together with current price, availability and the agreed handover scope.

Our delivery and handover checklist can help your receiving team record what arrives. Contact Exper Medical Network on +256 756 789 821 or info.brandexper@gmail.com for a quotation.
