Buying Surgical Lights in Uganda: A Theatre and Installation Checklist

Compare surgical lights for Ugandan theatres by illumination, positioning, room layout, mounting, backup power, cleaning and commissioning requirements.

Two surgical-light quotations can show similar maximum brightness yet describe very different systems. The light head, suspension, controls, power arrangements and installation scope all affect whether the proposed equipment fits the theatre's work.

For hospitals in Uganda and South Sudan, the useful comparison is not simply which light has more LEDs or a larger advertised lux value. Start with the procedures, room layout and clinical team's requirements, then ask suppliers to document the complete configuration.

Define the intended use and mounting arrangement

Ask the theatre team to describe the procedures performed, working positions and whether one or more light heads are required. Confirm that the offered product is intended for the proposed surgical use; an examination light should not be treated as equivalent merely because it looks bright.

For a mobile system, ask the team to review the base footprint, movement route, cable management and storage location. For a ceiling-mounted system, request the installation drawings and mounting requirements before placing the order. Neither arrangement should be selected without considering the room.

Exper's operating-theatre equipment page is a starting point for a site-specific enquiry. Supply the room dimensions, ceiling height, table position and intended clinical use so the requested configuration is clear.

Compare performance under stated conditions

Ask for illuminance at the specified working distance, light-field characteristics, colour-rendering information and the available adjustment range. Request an explanation of how performance is maintained when staff or equipment interrupt the light path. Avoid comparing values measured under different conditions as if they were interchangeable.

For context, Dräger's Polaris documentation describes model-dependent functions such as shadow compensation and configurable light systems. It illustrates why the feature list matters alongside brightness. This reference is not a claim that Exper stocks that system or that every surgical light has those functions.

Ask for a demonstration or a documented technical review involving the clinical users. Record which features are essential and which are optional, particularly cameras, additional displays or specialised lighting modes that can change the package cost.

Check the suspension against the whole room

Provide a layout showing the operating table, doors, monitors, supply columns and other suspended equipment. Ask the installer to review the proposed movement envelopes and potential conflicts. A light that reaches the table in one position may still need review across the intended working positions.

Getinge's hybrid-theatre planning example coordinates ceiling mounts, monitor arms and operating lights. Its specific layout is not a template for every theatre, but it demonstrates the need to plan suspended equipment together.

For ceiling installations, have a qualified professional confirm the structural support against the exact manufacturer's requirements. Do not approve mounting from a photograph of the ceiling finish. Ask who is responsible for the structural assessment, mounting components, electrical work and final installation documentation.

Specify power continuity and cleaning arrangements

Ask what electrical supply is required and what happens during an interruption. If backup operation is offered, request the battery or emergency-supply configuration, stated test conditions and maintenance requirements. Do not infer backup capability from the presence of two light heads.

Have infection-prevention staff review cleaning instructions, handle arrangements and any required reprocessing supplies. Ask which handles are reusable, which covers are consumable and how replacements are obtained. Include these items in the order rather than discovering the requirements during commissioning.

Agree acceptance before the theatre depends on it

  • Verify the supplied heads, suspension and controls against the approved configuration.
  • Document installation and electrical checks by appropriately qualified personnel.
  • Check positioning, controls and the agreed performance requirements.
  • Test the specified backup arrangement using the approved procedure.
  • Provide user orientation, manuals and cleaning instructions.
  • Record maintenance responsibilities, warranty conditions and service contacts.

The equipment handover checklist can help assign owners for these steps. If the project also includes a surgical table, review our operating-table accessories guide so the two purchases are planned together.

Request a complete quotation

Send the facility location, procedure profile, room drawing, preferred mounting type, number of heads and power information. Ask for separate equipment, site preparation, installation, training and support line items.
