A set of micropipettes is not automatically a complete liquid-handling solution. The laboratory also needs suitable tips, an appropriate volume range, a practical working arrangement and a way to verify that the equipment meets its requirements.
For a laboratory in Uganda or South Sudan, the most useful enquiry begins with the methods being performed. A generic request for “three pipettes and tips” can leave important questions unanswered. This is a procurement checklist, not a substitute for the laboratory's validated methods or staff training.
Build a transfer-volume schedule
Ask the laboratory lead to list the volumes transferred in each workflow and how often those transfers occur. Identify the routine volumes as well as occasional requirements. Give suppliers the schedule and ask which proposed instrument covers each task.
Do not select a range only because its maximum capacity is large enough. Ask for the manufacturer's stated performance at the volumes relevant to the method. A purchasing decision should consider the actual working range, not just the biggest number on the barrel.
Describe the liquid and the receiving vessel
Eppendorf's liquid-handling reference explains that liquid properties, transfer volume and vessel format influence instrument selection. Liquids that behave differently from water may require a different approach from routine air-cushion pipetting.
Tell the supplier whether the work involves ordinary aqueous reagents or liquids needing specialist assessment. Let the laboratory's method owner determine the suitable technique and instrument. Include the tube, strip or plate format so the proposed equipment can be assessed against the whole task.
Quote the pipette and tip as a matched combination
Request exact references for both the instrument and its proposed tips. Ask the supplier to document compatibility and identify the relevant tip characteristics. A familiar colour or a “universal” description is not a complete procurement specification.
The manufacturer's pipetting system finder treats instrument and consumable selection together. Use that principle when comparing offers: two pipette prices may not represent equivalent packages if the tips, packaging or support differ. The reference does not imply Exper supplies or represents this brand.
Have the laboratory specify whether its method requires filtered tips, a particular purity grade or sterile packaging. Do not treat those descriptions as interchangeable. Ask for the supporting product documentation and quantities per pack, rack or refill.
Consider workload and replenishment
Describe repetitive tasks and the number of vessels processed together. Ask users to review whether single-channel, multichannel, mechanical or electronic options fit the workflow. A more complex instrument is not necessarily better if its functions are unnecessary or difficult to support.
Estimate tip use from the laboratory's approved workflow and expected workload, not from a supplier's arbitrary starter-pack size. Request separate prices for initial equipment, tips, stands and any other required accessories. For facilities outside Kampala, state the destination and ask how future consumable orders would be handled.
Agree verification and maintenance responsibilities
Ask what inspection or calibration documentation accompanies each instrument and whether the serial number is identifiable on the record. Have the laboratory's quality lead define acceptance criteria and ongoing verification arrangements. Avoid adopting a maintenance interval simply because another laboratory uses it.
Request model-specific cleaning, servicing and storage instructions. Confirm any restrictions before assuming the entire instrument can be autoclaved. Our maintenance-records guide can help organise certificates, service history and responsibilities.
Prepare a comparable enquiry
Send Exper the transfer-volume schedule, liquid and vessel information, instrument quantities, tip requirements, destination and required verification support. Start through the laboratory equipment enquiry page and use our quotation comparison guide to distinguish confirmed inclusions from missing information.
