Laboratory Water Baths in Uganda: A Temperature and Capacity Checklist

Choose a laboratory water bath in Uganda by method temperature, stability, usable capacity, racks, water quality, power and acceptance checks.

“Four holes” describes a water-bath lid arrangement, not a complete laboratory specification. Before buying, a laboratory needs to know whether the bath can accommodate its containers and maintain the conditions required by its methods. A bright digital display is useful, but it is not by itself evidence of temperature accuracy.

For a clinic or laboratory in Uganda or South Sudan, the laboratory lead should approve the intended applications and acceptance criteria before suppliers quote. Use the instrument manual and the laboratory's validated procedures for actual operation.

Start with the method, then the temperature range

List the methods that require the bath, their working temperatures, permitted variation and typical holding times. State whether several methods must run at different temperatures at the same time; that may call for separate equipment rather than a larger single tank.

Ask for the model's working range under your room conditions, including any need for cooling near or below ambient temperature. A heating bath should not be assumed to provide refrigeration. Get the required accessories and performance conditions in writing.

Distinguish display resolution from performance

Request separate information about display resolution, temperature stability, uniformity across the usable area and accuracy or measurement uncertainty where specified. Ask which load, fluid level, lid and ambient conditions apply to the manufacturer's claims.

As an example of specification detail, JULABO's PURA 10 documentation distinguishes display resolution and stability and states conditions involving a cover and cooling accessories. These are examples of fields to compare, not specifications for the water bath listed by Exper, and do not imply Exper stocks that brand.

Measure the containers and usable space

Prepare a list of tube, flask or vessel dimensions and the maximum batch size. Request the internal tank dimensions, usable depth, permitted filling range and the space available after racks or supports are fitted. Check whether your intended immersion arrangement is permitted by the instrument and method instructions.

  • State the number and diameter of containers used together.
  • Confirm compatible racks, platforms, lids and removable rings.
  • Ask which accessories are included and which cost extra.
  • Measure bench space, including room to open the lid and drain the bath.
  • Decide whether a second batch can wait while the first is processed.

Exper's four-opening digital laboratory water-bath page provides a starting point for an enquiry. Confirm the exact supplied model and technical documentation before judging method suitability.

Plan water, electricity and routine care

Ask the manufacturer what water quality or fluid is permitted, how levels are maintained and which cleaning products may be used. Do not assume every bath accepts the same water or additives. JULABO's temperature-control-fluid guidance explains that the instrument, application and fluid need to be matched, including water quality and working temperature.

Request the power rating, voltage, frequency, plug and earthing requirements. Have the facility assess its circuit and any backup supply. Ask about over-temperature and low-water protection rather than assuming those features are present. Staff also need a safe process for cooling, emptying and cleaning the tank under its instructions.

Agree an acceptance check before delivery

Ask the laboratory lead and biomedical team to define how the bath will be checked at the temperatures and loading conditions actually used. Specify the suitable calibrated reference thermometer or sensor, where measurements will be taken, how results will be recorded and who approves release for routine work.

Keep the acceptance record, instrument identity, manual and service information together. Ask how temperature performance will be checked over time and what happens if a result is outside the laboratory's acceptance limits. Refer to the equipment handover checklist for the wider receiving process.

Send a method-based quotation request

Include your facility and destination, method temperatures, tolerances, batch sizes, container dimensions, required racks, available power and planned acceptance checks. Browse the laboratory equipment section for related equipment, and use the quotation comparison guide to record exclusions.
