A laboratory incubator is not selected by chamber volume alone. The proposed instrument must suit the laboratory's methods, room conditions, workload and arrangements for checking performance.
For a new laboratory or an equipment replacement in Uganda or South Sudan, ask the laboratory lead to prepare a short application brief before requesting quotations. This article concerns laboratory equipment, not neonatal incubators, and does not prescribe culture conditions or replace approved laboratory procedures.
Identify the required type of incubator
List the applications and the environmental conditions each method requires. Ask whether the task needs heating alone, heating and cooling, or a controlled atmosphere. Do not treat a conventional heated incubator and a CO₂ incubator as equivalent products because both have temperature controls.
Memmert's incubator range distinguishes heated, cooled and CO₂ systems. Its product information illustrates why selection should follow the application rather than a generic equipment name. It does not establish that Exper stocks or represents that manufacturer.
Compare working conditions, not just the controller display
Give the supplier the required working temperatures and the expected room conditions. Ask for the operating range and documented performance of the exact model under relevant conditions. A setpoint that can be entered on a display is not, by itself, evidence of suitable chamber performance.
Separate temperature variation across the chamber from fluctuation over time when reviewing specifications. For example, this manufacturer's model specification lists those measures separately and states a working range relative to ambient temperature. Do not transfer that model's values to another instrument; request the corresponding documentation for the actual offer.
Translate litres into a realistic loading plan
Describe the vessels, racks and approximate number of items the laboratory expects to accommodate. Ask for internal dimensions, shelf dimensions, permitted shelf loading and the number of shelves included. Have users review the proposed arrangement against the manufacturer's loading instructions.
A larger advertised chamber does not automatically resolve a poor shelf arrangement. Similarly, buying additional shelves is not a reason to exceed the documented limits or obstruct required circulation. Ask the supplier to clarify the proposed usable configuration before comparing prices.
Plan the room and supporting utilities
Request the exterior dimensions, installation clearances, electrical requirements and environmental limits. Compare them with the intended bench or floor location and the route into the laboratory. If the selected system needs gases, water or additional accessories, document those requirements separately rather than leaving them for delivery day.
Ask what happens after a power interruption and how the facility will handle affected work under its own procedures. Where monitoring or alarms are required, confirm what is included, what needs separate hardware and who will receive and act on alerts. Do not infer remote monitoring from the presence of a USB socket.
Agree acceptance and verification before ordering
Have the laboratory's quality lead define the checks required before use, the relevant acceptance criteria and who is responsible for the records. Ask what calibration or test documentation is supplied, and whether extra verification services must be quoted separately.
Request model-specific cleaning and maintenance instructions. A cleaning or decontamination function described for one product should not be assumed available on another. Record the serial number, manuals and service contacts using the approach in our maintenance-records guide.
Prepare a quotation that can be compared
Send Exper the application brief, required environmental conditions, loading plan, room information, destination and requested support. Start through the laboratory equipment enquiry page and ask for separate equipment, shelves, monitoring accessories, delivery and technical-service line items.
