Gynecological Examination Bed or Delivery Bed? A Uganda Buying Guide

Compare gynecological examination and delivery beds in Uganda by intended use, positioning, accessories, dimensions, load limits, cleaning and room fit.

By Exper Medical Network Ltd · Published

A gynecological examination bed and a delivery bed may share leg supports and an adjustable backrest, but they should not be treated as interchangeable. The clinical team needs to define the intended procedures, positions and accessories before procurement compares frame designs or prices.

This article is a purchasing guide for facilities in Uganda and South Sudan. Clinical leadership must approve the equipment for its intended use, and staff should follow the manufacturer's instructions and facility protocols.

Separate examination from delivery requirements

List every service planned for the room: consultation, examination, minor procedure, labour assessment or childbirth. Ask the clinical lead to identify required positions, patient access, staff access and accessories for each service. If one bed is expected to cover several uses, require the manufacturer to confirm those intended uses in writing.

Uganda's health-sector service standards state that a proper delivery bed should be available in a delivery room along with functional maternity and newborn-resuscitation equipment. That reinforces the need to specify a delivery-room package rather than selecting furniture in isolation.

Compare the configurations on Exper's site

Exper lists a triangular-base gynecological examination bed described with adjustable back and leg sections, cushioned upholstery, leg supports, side handles and a footstep.

The square-base gynecological delivery bed is described with adjustable sections, padded leg supports, side handles and a collection bowl. The two-step delivery bed is described with a detachable rolling foot section, adjustable backrest, leg supports and side handles. These descriptions are starting points; confirm the exact model and supplied configuration in the quotation.

Specify positioning and adjustment mechanisms

Request the permitted backrest and leg-section positions, adjustment method and locking mechanism. Ask whether adjustments are manual, mechanical, hydraulic or powered, and what maintenance they require. Do not infer a position or patient-transfer capability from photographs.

For detachable or rolling sections, ask how components lock together, where the detached section is stored and whether castors or brakes are fitted. The team should assess the arrangement in the room before ordering several units.

List accessories one by one

  • Leg supports, their adjustment range and attachment method.
  • Side handles, grips or rails and their intended function.
  • Footstep or patient-access aid, where included.
  • Collection bowl, tray or other procedure-specific accessories.
  • Mattress or upholstered sections and replacement availability.
  • Any separately required stool, light, screen or instrument trolley.

Ask for photographs and part numbers matching the quoted model. Accessories shown in supplier images may be optional or illustrate a different configuration.

Check dimensions, height and load limits

Request overall dimensions, usable patient-surface dimensions, fixed or adjustable height, bed weight and manufacturer-stated patient load limit. If the bed separates into sections, ask whether limits change by configuration. “Stainless steel” or “heavy duty” is not a load specification.

Measure doorways, corridors and the final room. Map staff working zones and space for the detachable section, footstep, collection bowl, trolley, privacy screen and newborn-resuscitation area where applicable. WHO childbirth-care guidance lists the delivery bed alongside clean linen, curtains, a clean alternative-position surface, lighting and a newborn-resuscitation work surface, illustrating why room planning should consider the full workflow.

Approve materials and cleaning

Request the frame material and grade where specified, upholstery construction, seams and the manufacturer's cleaning and disinfection instructions. Have the infection-prevention team review compatibility with facility products, including hard-to-reach joints beneath removable sections and around adjustment mechanisms.

Ask which upholstery, supports, handles, locks and castors can be replaced locally or ordered as spares. Record inspection and maintenance requirements using our maintenance-records guide.

Send a clinical-use quotation request

Include the intended services, required positions and accessories, patient-access needs, dimensions, load limit, cleaning requirements, quantity and destination. Use the general examination-bed checklist for additional room and receiving questions.
