3-Part vs 5-Part CBC Analysers: A Buying Guide for Ugandan Labs

Compare 3-part and 5-part CBC analysers for Ugandan laboratories by reporting needs, workload, reagents, quality control, workflow and support.

By Exper Medical Network Ltd · Published

Choosing between a 3-part and a 5-part CBC analyser starts with the reports your laboratory needs to issue. The number describes the white-cell differential grouping; it does not by itself tell you the total test capacity, staffing requirement or cost of operating the laboratory.

For a laboratory in Uganda, a useful comparison combines the clinical reporting requirement with actual workload and the ability to keep the selected model supplied and supported. Ask the laboratory lead to approve the required parameters before comparing prices.

Start with the requested report

Obtain a sample report from each proposed analyser and compare its reported parameters, units, flags and graphical outputs. Ask the supplier to explain which results are directly reported by that model and how its flagging works. The laboratory must retain its own approved process for reviewing flagged results, microscopy and referral where needed.

Exper lists the Mindray BC-20 as a 3-part analyser and the BC-5150 as a 5-part analyser. Mindray's official BC-5150 page describes it as providing CBC and 5-part differential results for laboratories including those with relatively low daily sample volumes. This illustrates why sample volume alone should not decide the category.

Describe a normal day and a busy hour

Give the supplier your usual daily count, busiest period and expected growth. Ask for the proposed model's throughput, sample-loading method, startup time, shutdown routine and handling of repeat tests. A throughput figure should be considered alongside the actual steps staff perform between samples.

Confirm supported sample types, required volumes and any preparation steps from the exact model's documentation. Do not transfer specifications between similarly named models: BC-20 and BC-20s, for example, should be treated as distinct identifiers when requesting documentation.

Compare a complete operating package

Request the full list of required reagents, cleaning solutions, controls and calibrators, together with pack sizes and storage requirements. Ask which items are included at installation and which must be ordered separately. Confirm unopened and in-use expiry information and how these affect your expected consumption.

For each quotation, build the same monthly estimate covering patient tests, quality-control runs, repeats and routine cleaning. Our CBC reagent-budget guide covers this calculation in more detail. Avoid assuming either category always has the lowest cost per reported result; obtain figures for the proposed model and your workload.

Plan quality control and reporting

Ask what quality-control functions the analyser supports and which control materials are appropriate. Have the laboratory lead specify its acceptance and verification requirements, staff training and ongoing quality programme. Agree how results will reach the clinical team: printed report, manual entry or a supported laboratory information system connection.

If an interface is required, identify the software, connection method, licence charges and who will test it. Include sample identifiers and report formatting in acceptance checks. A connector socket in a photograph is not confirmation that the proposed system integration is included.

Check the space and service arrangements

Request bench dimensions, clearance, environmental requirements, electrical requirements and arrangements for reagent containers and waste. Ask who will install the analyser, train users and respond to faults. Obtain warranty exclusions, preventive-maintenance requirements and the process for sourcing replacement parts in writing.

For a South Sudan facility, state whether installation and support are required in Juba or another location. Agree travel, transport and reagent delivery responsibilities before ordering. The service-agreement checklist helps define that scope.
