Switching to Disposable Suction Liners in Uganda: Check the Whole System

Assess a switch from reusable suction jars to disposable liners: confirm approved compatibility, processing changes, waste handling and recurring supply costs.

By Exper Medical Network Ltd · Published

A disposable suction liner may change how a collection system is handled, but it is not a universal insert for any jar. For a Ugandan facility considering a switch from reusable containers, the decision involves compatibility, infection prevention, waste handling and recurring purchasing—not just the price of a liner.

Identify the installed collection system first

Record the suction unit model and the canister, lid, bracket, tubing and filter references. Ask whether the manufacturer permits the proposed system on that unit and what additional components are required. A supplier should identify the full supported arrangement rather than offer a bag that appears to fit.

Laerdal’s official suction-unit resources provide different documentation for reusable and disposable canister systems. That distinction illustrates why the instructions must match the actual configuration. It does not mean that a Laerdal component is suitable for another brand or that Exper has a particular system in stock.

Review the workflow with infection prevention

Ask the clinical, infection-prevention and biomedical teams to map what changes at collection, changeover, transport, cleaning and disposal. Identify which components remain reusable and which are single-use in the approved system. Do not assume a disposable liner eliminates all cleaning or inspection responsibilities.

Check the manufacturer’s filter and overflow-protection requirements as part of the complete arrangement. Do not omit protection components, reuse single-use supplies or improvise connectors to reduce costs. The facility must approve the actual handling procedure; this article is not a clinical suction or waste-disposal protocol.

Compare the full recurring cost

Request separate quotations for any initial conversion parts and the recurring supplies. Ask for pack quantities, storage requirements, shelf-life information where applicable and current replenishment arrangements. Confirm whether supporting containers or brackets are included or need to be ordered separately.

Use the facility’s own activity and consumption records to estimate usage. Include the cost of the approved cleaning and waste arrangements when comparing options. Do not assume either reusable or disposable systems will always be cheaper, or claim a time saving without observing the local workflow.

For an illustrative comparison, one offer may price only the liner while another includes a supported canister assembly. Compare equivalent usable systems before calculating recurring costs. Keep uncertain costs visible instead of entering zero.

Plan continuity before changing the standard

Confirm how replacement supplies will be ordered and who checks stock. Ask what approved contingency arrangement the facility can use if the selected consumable becomes unavailable. Do not standardise every department around a new liner while the replenishment plan remains an assumption.

Where a trial is appropriate, let the responsible teams define its scope and acceptance criteria. The assessment should consider the actual equipment, staff instructions, storage space and waste pathway. It must not become an uncontrolled clinical experiment with unverified parts.

Request a system-level assessment

Send Exper the suction unit and collection-system details, intended department, quantities and delivery location through our suction equipment page. Ask whether a compatible arrangement and ongoing supplies can be offered, with the scope documented. For selecting the pump itself, use our manual versus electric suction guide.

Keep the approved parts list, instructions and handover checks with the asset record. Our handover checklist helps separate receipt from technical acceptance. Do not place a changed configuration into service until the facility’s authorised review is complete.
