A sterilizer may be available while the service runs short of suitable packaging. For a dental clinic or instrument-processing team in Juba, ordering pouches should begin with the approved reprocessing workflow—not a photograph of whichever packet is easiest to source. Packaging, sealing and monitoring supplies need to be planned together.

Define the process before the shopping list
Ask the infection-prevention or reprocessing lead to identify the instrument sets, sterilization method and approved packaging system. CDC guidance explains that packaging must be compatible with the process and allow the sterilizing agent to reach the items while maintaining the protective barrier afterward.
This does not mean every pouch is suitable for every sterilizer or load. Obtain the instructions for the packaging, instruments and sterilizer. Resolve missing compatibility information before approving an alternative. This article is a purchasing checklist, not a procedure for preparing or releasing sterile instruments.
Specify usable packs and the sealing arrangement
List the required formats and sizes against the intended instrument sets. Have responsible staff confirm suitability rather than estimating from a catalogue image. State whether the order calls for preformed pouches, reels or another approved system, and identify the sealing method required.
If heat sealing is involved, ask which compatible sealing equipment and associated checks are needed. If a self-sealing product is proposed, obtain its instructions rather than treating it as equivalent to any heat-sealed product. Separate the initial equipment cost from recurring packaging costs.
Keep monitoring supplies visible
A colour-changing mark on packaging does not, by itself, prove that sterilization has been achieved. CDC describes monitoring through mechanical, chemical and biological methods. Let the responsible team specify the supplies required by its approved programme and the relevant manufacturers’ instructions.
For the quotation, identify each requested indicator or record supply separately. Ask for its intended process, reference, pack quantity and applicable storage or expiry information. Do not let “pouches with indicators” conceal other monitoring requirements.
Compare quantities that the service can actually use
Request the unit of sale: individual pouch, box, reel or carton. Compare like-for-like formats and quantities. Use the facility’s own workload and purchasing records to estimate requirements, including approved contingency stock, rather than copying another clinic’s monthly order.
As an illustrative comparison, a low-priced carton with the wrong size distribution may leave the most-used pack unavailable. Ask whether the supplier can quote the actual mix. Keep uncertain availability and replenishment timing visible instead of assuming every size can be supplied together.
Prepare receipt, storage and the enquiry
Before dispatch, agree how packaging will be protected in transit and where it will be stored after arrival in Juba, following product instructions. At receipt, match references and quantities to the approved list and refer damage or uncertain condition to the responsible team. Do not distribute a questionable consignment simply because it is needed urgently.
