A patient monitor simulator should be selected around the monitors and maintenance tasks in your facility, not simply by counting the parameters named in a brochure. Parameter coverage, connector compatibility, test ranges, accuracy information and documentation all determine whether the simulator can support the biomedical team's work.
This guide helps hospitals, training institutions and service teams in Uganda and South Sudan prepare a purchasing specification. A simulator generates test signals; it does not replace manufacturer service procedures, electrical-safety testing or clinical verification of a patient monitor.
Inventory the monitors you need to test
List each monitor manufacturer, model and installed parameter. Record ECG lead configurations, invasive-pressure connectors, temperature probes and any other interfaces. Then mark which functions require routine functional checks, preventive maintenance, fault investigation or classroom demonstration.
Exper's MS200 multiparameter patient simulator listing describes 12-lead ECG, arrhythmia, adult and paediatric waveforms, pacemaker, respiration, invasive blood pressure, temperature and ECG calibration waveforms. The page does not state NIBP or SpO₂ simulation, so buyers should not assume those functions are included.
Compare parameters one by one
Create a matrix with one row for each required function and columns for simulated ranges, waveform choices, resolution, stated accuracy, channels and applicable connectors. For ECG, ask about lead configuration, selectable rates and amplitudes, arrhythmias, ST or pacemaker options where needed. For respiration, IBP and temperature, request the exact ranges and output characteristics.
Official product ranges from Fluke Biomedical show that multiparameter simulators can cover different combinations of ECG, SpO₂, temperature, respiration, NIBP, IBP and other functions. This illustrates why the word “multiparameter” is not a complete specification; it is not a claim that the MS200 shares Fluke functions or performance.
Separate simulation from measurement
Ask whether each channel only generates a signal or also measures a value from the device under test. Confirm whether the proposed simulator supports performance verification, quick functional checks or both. A displayed waveform does not by itself prove that every manufacturer tolerance has been tested.
Request the simulator's published accuracy, uncertainty or tolerance information and the conditions under which it applies. The biomedical lead should compare that information with the monitor manufacturer's service limits and the facility's quality procedure.
Specify cables and adapters explicitly
A simulator may be unusable with a particular monitor if the correct lead box, IBP cable or temperature adapter is missing. Ask the supplier to list every included cable by name and part number, then separately quote optional adapters for the installed monitor fleet.
- ECG lead outputs and any required connector box.
- IBP channel cables and supported transducer interfaces.
- Temperature cables and supported resistance curves or standards.
- Power adapter, charging cable and battery arrangement.
- Carrying case, manual and computer connection, if applicable.
Do not treat a photograph of an accessory as proof that it is included. The MS200 product page, for example, states that a separately pictured SpO₂ simulator is for reference only and is not part of the MS200 package.
Plan calibration, software and records
Ask what factory test or calibration documentation accompanies the unit, how future calibration or verification is arranged, and what turnaround or shipping responsibilities apply. Request software requirements, update policy, supported operating systems and data-export formats if the proposed model uses a computer.
WHO's technical-specification user guide identifies procurement and maintenance planning as uses for written specifications. Apply that principle by including documentation, accessories, training, calibration and lifecycle support in the quotation—not just the device.
Agree acceptance checks and training
Before delivery, write an acceptance plan using representative monitors and approved service procedures. At handover, verify the exact model, parameter options, cables, battery, charger, manuals and documentation. Have authorised biomedical staff demonstrate selected outputs and record the results.
