A centrifuge quotation can look complete while leaving out the components that make it useful to your laboratory. A machine with enough tube positions may still need different adapters, a different rotor or a temperature-control option for the intended work.
For laboratories in Uganda and South Sudan, start with the approved laboratory procedures and actual sample containers, not just a request for a particular speed. This guide is for procurement planning; it does not replace laboratory protocols, biosafety assessment or the equipment instructions.
Describe the work before choosing the model
Ask the laboratory lead to list the intended applications and the requirements specified in each procedure. Record the sample type, tube reference, batch size, required relative centrifugal force, run time and any temperature requirement. Keep distinct workflows separate if their requirements differ.
Eppendorf's centrifugation guidance identifies sample, vessel, rotor, force and temperature as important selection parameters. A headline speed or the general description “laboratory centrifuge” is therefore not a sufficient specification.
Compare force, not only RPM
Revolutions per minute (RPM) describes rotational speed. Relative centrifugal force (RCF), expressed as × g, also depends on rotor radius. Two rotor configurations at the same RPM do not necessarily produce the same RCF.
The manufacturer's guidance on transferring centrifugation parameters explains this distinction. Ask the supplier to confirm the required RCF for the exact proposed rotor and tube arrangement. A laboratory professional should assess whether the configuration meets the method; do not improvise settings from an online buying guide.
Request a complete rotor-and-tube package
Send the supplier the tube manufacturer's reference, dimensions, nominal volume and cap type. If photographs are useful, include the label as well as the tube itself. Ask for written compatibility confirmation rather than relying on “it should fit.”
- Name the centrifuge and rotor models separately.
- List any buckets, adapters, lids and other required components.
- Confirm usable capacity with your actual tubes, not only the maximum advertised capacity.
- Request the relevant operating limits and manufacturer documentation.
- Ask which additional configurations can be supported and what they would cost.
A useful comparison exercise is to send every bidder the same tube schedule. If one quotation includes adapters and another does not, ask for clarification before comparing totals. Manufacturer references here illustrate selection principles; they do not imply Exper stocks or represents that brand.
Plan for peak workload and the available bench
Estimate the busiest collection period, not simply the average daily sample count. Ask the laboratory team to consider loading, unloading and preparation time alongside the run itself. A larger rotor is not automatically the right answer if the lab handles several small, different batches.
Request the installed dimensions, lid-opening clearance, ventilation requirements and electrical specifications for the proposed model. Check these against the actual room. If a procedure requires temperature control, ask for the documented performance under the proposed operating conditions rather than assuming all centrifuges provide refrigeration.
Agree safety review and handover responsibilities
Have the laboratory's responsible personnel assess the intended specimens and required containment. Ask the supplier to document lid-locking arrangements, imbalance protection where provided, cleaning instructions and the scope of user training. Model-specific rotor inspection and maintenance requirements should be available before use.
At handover, reconcile the complete package against the order and have qualified personnel perform the agreed checks. Keep the manuals, serial numbers, service contacts and acceptance record together. Our maintenance-records guide and delivery handover checklist provide complementary administrative guidance.
What to send with your enquiry
Include your facility and destination, applications, tube schedule, peak batch requirements, method requirements and requested support. Use Exper's laboratory equipment enquiry page to discuss the package, and request separate prices for the instrument, rotor, accessories, delivery and any agreed technical services.
