A neonatal phototherapy purchase should include more than a light and a timer. Maternity and newborn units in Uganda need documentation showing what the equipment delivers, how its output is checked and how it fits the care area. These questions help a facility compare quotations before committing to a model.
The neonatal team should define the clinical requirements. This article addresses equipment procurement; treatment decisions, exposure arrangements and monitoring follow the team's clinical protocols and the manufacturer's instructions.
Identify the exact light source and performance data
Ask the supplier to state the manufacturer, model, light-source technology and specified wavelength range. Request irradiance data with the units, measurement distance and illuminated area clearly identified. A timer, electrical wattage or a photograph of blue light does not establish the performance of the proposed device.
Ask for the manufacturer's instructions and technical sheet rather than comparing headline numbers taken from different measurement conditions. The clinical and biomedical teams should review whether the documented output and coverage meet the facility's requirements.
Include a plan for measuring output
Ask what compatible radiometer is recommended, whether it is included, and how its accuracy is maintained. Confirm who will check output at acceptance and during ongoing use, using the manufacturer's measurement procedure. Include any calibration or service costs in the buying comparison.
For example, Dräger's BiliLux information describes a device-specific radiometer for irradiance measurement. This illustrates the need to match the measuring instrument to the system. It does not mean that a BiliLux instrument is suitable for another lamp or that Exper supplies the Dräger system.
Check the complete bedside arrangement
State whether the light will be used with a cot, incubator or warmer, and provide the make and model of that equipment. Ask about the approved mounting method, working clearances, height adjustment and access for care. Have the supplier confirm the intended configuration rather than assuming that any overhead unit fits every bed.
For a mobile stand, review its footprint, movement, brakes and storage position. Check the route between rooms and the placement of power cables. If sharing one device between departments is planned, discuss availability and cleaning arrangements with the clinical team before calculating how many units to buy.
Specify accessories separately
- List the light head, stand or mounting assembly, power components and supplied manuals.
- Identify the compatible radiometer and any separately priced measurement equipment.
- Ask the clinical team to specify required eye-protection products and quantities.
- Confirm replacement light components, where applicable, and other service parts.
- Record which items are reusable and obtain their cleaning instructions.
Exper's B-MT100 phototherapy listing describes an adjustable mobile overhead unit with a digital timer and asks buyers to confirm lamp type and irradiance. Use the enquiry to obtain those missing technical details for the actual unit offered.
Plan acceptance and ongoing care
Agree the receiving checks, assembly, output verification and user instruction before delivery. Ask how the manufacturer defines maintenance and light-source replacement, and whether operating hours are recorded. Obtain compatible cleaning agents and instructions for surfaces and accessories.
Keep the model, serial number, output-check record and service contact together. Request warranty coverage for the light source, controls and stand, including any exclusions. Our handover checklist helps record what arrived and what remains to be completed.
Send a complete enquiry
Browse neonatal equipment and send Exper the care setting, cot or incubator model, clinical team's performance requirements, quantity, measurement needs and destination. For delivery to South Sudan, specify who will receive, assemble and accept the equipment and request the support arrangements in writing.
