A hospital privacy screen needs to provide useful coverage without blocking staff movement, equipment access or emergency routes. Panel count alone does not establish its working length, stability or suitability for the cleaning process used in a ward.
This guide helps hospitals and clinics in Uganda and South Sudan prepare a complete purchasing enquiry. The facility should assess privacy requirements, infection-prevention workflow and room layout before selecting a screen.
Map the area that needs privacy
Measure the bed, examination area or treatment space and mark the position where the screen will stand. Record the open width and height required, clearance around the patient, staff access and the location of doors, oxygen outlets, IV stands and other equipment.
Exper's four-panel folding hospital privacy screen is described with blue curtains, hinged metal frames and castor wheels. Ask for the exact open dimensions, folded dimensions and individual panel width of the supplied model before deciding how many units a room needs.
Check panels, hinges and viewing gaps
Request a drawing or dimensions showing the frame edges, feet, castors and gaps above and below the curtain. Ask how the panels move and whether they can be arranged in a straight line, angle or partial enclosure. The ward team should verify coverage from relevant sight lines.
Inspect how hinges limit the panel angles and how the screen behaves when partly folded. A model that is stable when fully open may respond differently in a narrow configuration. Ask the supplier for permitted arrangements rather than improvising unsupported positions.
Assess stability and castors
Request the screen's weight, base footprint, castor diameter and braking arrangement. Confirm which wheels brake and whether movement is allowed while the panels are open. Test manoeuvrability on the actual floor, including thresholds and ramps, under manufacturer instructions.
A privacy screen should not be used as a handrail, walking aid or support for equipment. Plan where it will be parked so folded units do not project into corridors, fire exits or emergency access routes.
Specify removable curtains and replacements
Ask whether each curtain can be removed without tools, how it is labelled and which replacement size and attachment system it uses. Request the fabric composition, colour options, opacity information and manufacturer care instructions. If spare curtains are required, include them as separate quotation lines.
CDC environmental-cleaning guidance identifies the edges of privacy curtains as high-touch areas and advises facilities to develop cleaning strategies based on risk and workflow. It also calls for removal and laundering of privacy curtains during specified terminal-cleaning processes. Review the CDC environmental-cleaning procedures with the infection-prevention team.
Approve the cleaning process before purchase
Request separate cleaning instructions for the curtain, frame, hinges and castors. Confirm which detergents or disinfectants are compatible, what laundering method is allowed, and how the screen is reassembled after cleaning. A washable-looking fabric should not be processed without its instructions.
WHO published general surface-cleaning and disinfection instructions for patient-care areas on 6 March 2025. Use facility-approved procedures alongside the screen manufacturer's material-specific instructions.
Plan quantities, storage and receiving checks
- Record open and folded dimensions and required coverage per room.
- Confirm panel count, frame material, curtain set and attachment method.
- Specify castors, brakes, replacement curtains and other spare parts.
- Confirm assembly, cleaning documents and warranty scope.
- At delivery, inspect hinges, frames, curtains and castors before use.
