An emergency shower or eyewash station is not ready simply because it has been bolted to the floor. The equipment, water supply, access route and inspection arrangements must work together. A facility can buy an impressive-looking unit and still have an incomplete installation.
This guide is for hospital laboratories, cleaning-product stores, workshops and other workplaces in Uganda and South Sudan preparing a purchasing specification. A qualified safety professional should assess the actual hazards and approve the design. It is not a chemical-exposure treatment guide.
Choose equipment from the hazard assessment
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety guidance distinguishes body showers from eyewash equipment and recommends matching the selection to the chemicals and tasks involved. An overhead shower is not an eyewash substitute, and small personal eyewash bottles do not replace a suitable full station.
Prepare a list of chemicals, their safety data sheets and the work areas where exposure is possible. Ask the safety lead whether eye, face or whole-body protection is needed. Include staff who handle deliveries, clean spills or maintain equipment; the purchasing brief should not cover only the most visible laboratory bench.
Separate the equipment quote from the installation quote
Exper's emergency shower and eyewash brochure introduces a combined floor-mounted station with an overhead shower and dual eyewash. Use it to begin discussion, then request the exact model, manufacturer instructions, supplied fittings and performance documentation for the offered unit.
Ask the quotation to identify responsibility for plumbing, foundations or fixings, drainage, signage, testing and staff orientation. A line labelled “installation” should be expanded into named tasks. Confirm who supplies any valves, pipework, water treatment or temperature-control components required by the approved design.
Verify the water supply before committing
CCOHS explains that equipment needs an adequate flushing supply and that combination units must meet the relevant requirements for their components. Its guidance also addresses water temperature and regular flushing. This is technical guidance, not a declaration of Ugandan or South Sudanese legal compliance.
Ask the installer to record the available supply conditions and compare them with the manufacturer's requirements. What happens during a water interruption? Will other fixtures affect operation? How will the installed combination be tested? Require written answers rather than assuming a nearby tap establishes suitability.
Include the water source, proposed station location and plumbing route in the enquiry. Where a storage tank or self-contained system is proposed, request the designer's sizing basis and maintenance plan. Do not calculate capacity from a photograph or select a tank on purchase price alone.
Review the route with the people who will use it
CCOHS stresses accessible placement, an unobstructed route and visible signage. Have the safety lead assess the location against the actual hazard, including workers who may have impaired vision during an incident.
Walk the proposed route during a normal shift. Record doors, stored cartons, equipment movements and changes between day and night working conditions. Include accessibility needs in the design brief. Ask who will keep the route clear and who can authorize a future layout change.
Make the handover test a purchasing requirement
- Identify the exact unit, its instructions and the installed components.
- Document the performance checks required by the approved design and manufacturer's instructions.
- Record any defects and who is responsible for correcting them.
- Provide staff orientation and an agreed emergency-response procedure.
- Name an inspection owner and retain dated maintenance records.
Our handover checklist can help organize the paperwork. Use the maintenance-records guide to track inspections, repairs and follow-up actions. Ask for replacement-part details and support terms before accepting the order.
Send a site-specific quotation request
Provide the workplace location, hazard assessment, required equipment type, proposed installation photos or drawings, available water supply and number of stations. Ask Exper to confirm the equipment package and any offered installation or support scope in writing; availability, prices and delivery arrangements require confirmation.
