Anaesthesia Machine Installation in Uganda: A Theatre Readiness Checklist

Prepare an operating theatre for an anaesthesia machine in Uganda: confirm gas supply, power, ventilation, monitoring, accessories, training and service.

By Exper Medical Network Ltd · Published

An anaesthesia machine should be selected as part of an operating-theatre system, not as an isolated item. Before a hospital in Uganda requests a quotation, the clinical, biomedical and facilities teams should agree on the intended procedures, gas sources, electrical supply, monitoring, room services and support plan.

This guide is for procurement and site preparation. Model selection, installation, checkout and clinical use must follow the manufacturer's instructions, applicable requirements and the facility's authorised anaesthesia and biomedical teams.

Start with the intended clinical service

State the types of theatre work, patient groups and expected workload. Ask the anaesthesia lead to define the required ventilation modes, gas configuration, vaporiser arrangement, breathing-system needs and monitoring. Do not copy a specification from another hospital without checking whether the service plan and infrastructure are the same.

Browse Exper's anaesthesia-machine page and operating-theatre equipment section, then request a model-specific offer.

Document the medical-gas plan

Tell the supplier whether the theatre will use a central pipeline, cylinders, an oxygen concentrator arrangement or another approved source. List available gases, connection standards, working pressures and backup arrangements as confirmed by the facility's engineer. Ask which hoses, regulators, cylinder yokes and connectors are included.

Do not assume that a connector shown in a photograph matches the facility. The supplier and installer should confirm compatibility with the actual gas installation in writing and identify any work that is outside the quotation.

Check electricity, earthing and backup power

Provide the measured mains voltage and frequency, socket type, earthing arrangement and available backup power. Ask for the quoted model's power input, battery function and specified operating environment. Have a qualified electrician or biomedical engineer assess the circuit and protective arrangements before delivery.

Clarify which functions continue during a power interruption and for how long under the manufacturer's stated conditions. The theatre's contingency plan should be approved by the clinical team rather than inferred from a battery icon.

Define monitoring and accessories line by line

Ask the quotation to separate the main workstation, ventilator, vaporisers, patient monitor, gas analysis, breathing circuits, absorbers, suction, scavenging interface, trolley or drawers and other accessories. A catalogue photograph can show items that are optional.

  • Record the exact model and quantity of each vaporiser and monitor.
  • List adult and paediatric accessories required by the clinical team.
  • Ask which reusable and single-use items are needed to begin work.
  • Request compatibility details for circuits, sensors, sampling lines and replacement parts.
  • State who will supply the first set of approved consumables.

Our patient-monitor accessories checklist can help separate the monitor from its cuffs, probes, cables and disposables.

Prepare the room and equipment route

Measure doors, corridors, lifts and the final equipment position. Confirm floor loading where relevant, clearances for access and service, lighting, ventilation and the route for medical-gas hoses and electrical cables. Ask whether the model needs an active anaesthetic-gas scavenging connection and have the facility team confirm how it will be provided.

Keep oxygen-enriched areas and ignition risks within the facility's approved safety controls. Building, gas and electrical work should be completed and documented by qualified personnel before commissioning.

Include acceptance, training and service

WHO's medical-device procurement resource guide treats procurement as a lifecycle process. Ask the offer to state delivery, installation, acceptance testing, user orientation, technical training, warranty, preventive maintenance and fault-response arrangements separately.

At handover, record the model and serial numbers, supplied software or configuration, accessories, manuals, test results and unresolved items. Agree who is authorised to commission the machine and who will keep its maintenance records. Use Exper's delivery and handover checklist alongside the model documentation.

Request an anaesthesia-machine site survey

Send Exper the facility location, intended theatre service, patient groups, gas sources, electrical details, backup-power plan, required monitoring and requested accessories. Include photographs and measurements of the room connections where appropriate.
